Sixty Second Serenity: Give up control

Today I got off the PATH train, only to find the platform jammed (AMTRAK had caused a power outage, knocking out service on 3 NJ Transit lines). Lots of upset, confused commuters & day-trippers.
I went down into the station and tried to get some info about the likely length of the delay. Didn’t get much, so I called Judi and we discussed how we’d handle dinner plans. Grabbed a brioche, and hung out.
What else could I have done?
Sometimes, we are Masters of the Universe. Frequently, however, we must recognize that our plans are thwarted, and are beyond our control. Neither grief, denial, anger nor bargaining will avail us much, so we should strive to preserve our sanity and stomach lining by going with the flow.
What do I do when I’m stuck? I like to notice stuff around me. There are always different situations – conversations, clothes and people around you. Personally, I enjoy playing Fashion Police (sometimes I just have to shake my head in amazement, you know?) when I’m stuck with others. Not that anyone ever gets a summons from me, but Clinton & Stacy would have a field day.
You will be back to hegemony over your piece of the world soon enough. For now, relax and enjoy what is around you.
